Fragment der Eurydike

Wie gut, daß ich von deinen Fersen ließ,
Und wieder durch den Schlaf der Tale fließ.
Nun bin ich an den alten Bach gebannt,
Ich kleine Flamme, wandelnd im Gewand.
Und weil ich von den hellen Kernen aß,
Neigt mich der leichte Wind auf Schilf und Gras.
O weise Müdigkeit, o Müdigkeit, die weiß —
Wie weise weh ich durch den Schlafenskreis.
Nicht kann ich, Freund, dich halten an der Hand,
Da wachend du verkennst, was schlafend ich erkannt.
Und die mit fernem Lächeln dir entglitt,
Merk’ auf, sie weiß von Tor und Weg und Schritt.
Und die in tiefster Wolkenfremde geht,
Das Heimische ihr ziemt, daß sie’s versteht:
Sie weiß den Himmel, dem ein Sonntag glückt,
Unzählige Frauenhand, die eine Tochter schmückt.
Was sich im Licht begegnet fremd und groß,
Hier ist es nah und wie aus meinem Schoß.

Fragment of Eurydice

How good it is that I left at your heels, 
And flow once more through the sleep of the dale.
Now I am spellbound by this ancient stream,
I, a little flame, wandering in this robe.
And since I have eaten of the bright seeds,
I bend to the gentle wind on reeds and grass.
O wise weariness, o weariness, that which knows—
How wise I drift through the circle of sleep.
I cannot, friend, take a hold of your hand,
When you misjudge waking what I know sleeping.
And who slid from you with a distant smile,
Pay heed, she knows what gate and path and stride,
And who walks in outlands of deepest clouds,
The homelikeness suits her, it’s understood:
She knows heaven a Sunday succeeds in,
An incalculable woman’s hand adorning a daughter.
What comes across in light as strange and large,
Here it is near and as though from my womb.

Note: line 4, in this robe (im Gewand), this refers back to the flame; line 5, bright seeds (hellen Kernen), i.e., pomegranate seeds, the food of the Underworld, which consigns the soul there.
