Verlust

Also starbst du mir stündlich.

Loss

To still lose you,
I who already lost you during many a midnight!
To still lose you,
I who saw you so often depart in the early five a.m. light!
I loved you,
So you died for me every hour,
I am accustomed to the horror of my horror,
Accustomed to my tossing in this dream.
Still you shine on the way to it,
But I already saw you dwindle to the side.
Still you check the turning of summer with your summer,
But I already put you in your place.
Still you laugh over the stairs,
But I already filled the bleak lamp.
Still you are there, you still haven’t left, you still breathe this dear allotment,
But I lost you on hard mornings often, I realize my widowerhood.
In this way you resound most to me still,
But I already poured the bowl over your grass.

Note: line 15, as in “allotted time”; line 16, basin (Schale), an allusion to Revelations 16 and the first of the seven bowls of God’s wrath the angels pour that results in festering sores upon man. The poem can be read as an elegy for a revenant wife or a prostitute, the bowl being for the douche.
