A Special Wind

This is a wind. It marches like a sentry
First along the house from West to East.
Then like a prowler, peering back and forth,
It presses on in unhesitating return.
Yes, this wind has a bull neck.
It wiles the wood. Inside the house cupboards squeak.
When it paws at the shutters in passing,
Lock and hook are wholly taken in by it.
One of the smitten has let it inside.
It fills the room with the mass of its body
Of sea air, bracingness, oil and smoke scent.
The sleeper’s chest expands with its visit.

[1940s]

Note: line 11, oil, as allusion to the Summerland Oil Field in Santa Barbara, where Werfel rented a bungalow getaway and wrote many of his last poems there between 1943 and ’45.
