Blue Dresses & Amen
I used to talk to myself in the mirror
all the time, for such long times
that I would begin to see not myself talking
but the mouth in the mirror,
which by then I had watched too long
to call mine. I did this in need for sound
at a time when I’d been living alone
shut back in the hills.
So who’s the crazy broad I would say.
Or Brilliance isn’t always manifest.
Once a man with an Amen look
warned me not to use the mirror at all
in my song. It was the year I wore
blue dresses. I put my arms into them like sky
& walked out while he looked
out the window.
