The Other Side of the Sun

“...we’re not only seeing the sun’s dark side, we’re feeling,
twisting and listening to it as well.”
                                                              Lika Guhathakurta, NASA
Think of it as solar mood—la couleur des pommes
behind a curtain, another language—where something
that seemed round and fragrant with the taste of fruit
caused the senses to leap a barrier,
as if we were dancing, this jeté and aujourhui
our extended daily progress through the air
not on waves of light carrying us toward or away
but sent from the shadow heart that embraces
                                              what is alien to itself,
becoming the mammoth flower
whose golden pollen drifts through space,
carrying our likeness on the sifting solar wind—
transfiguring silence and zero heat into language
and however unshapely or useless song.
